Residential Women’s Shelter Supervisor

Full Time Position

Halton Women’s Place is the only emergency shelter for women seeking safety from domestic violence in Halton Region. We have a full time position available for a Client Services Supervisor in our residential services program. Reporting to the Manager, Programs and Services the successful incumbent will be responsible for ensuring the safe, healthy and effective provision of shelter programs and services.

Position Summary:

Supervises the provision of crisis intervention, counselling, education about violence against women, advocacy, and referral services to abused and/or homeless women and their children according to the mandate, policies and procedures of Halton Women’s Place. Provides supervision, direction and support to crisis intervention, child and youth, relief employees and volunteers. Responsible for overseeing the safety and security of the staff, volunteers and shelter.

Key Responsibilities:

Residential Program Supervision

  1. Ensures staff have training with respect to safety, security and office equipment.
  2.  Oversees delivery of services to our clients and their children through the supervision of crisis intervention counsellors, relief counsellors, and placement students on a day-to-day basis.
  3.  Ensures that the services to women and children are provided according to the policies and procedures of the shelter (e.g. safety policy, weekly residents’ meeting, etc.); consults with colleague CSS/Manager when appropriate.
  4.  Ensures that referrals and recommended actions are followed up with counsellors and community agencies.
  5.  Ensures client files are maintained according to policies and procedures and documentation meets the required standards.
  6.  Provides supervision, assistance in problem solving, and support to counsellors and directs action to be taken; supervision includes providing constructive feedback to employees with respect to performance improvement requirements.
  7.  Participates in the hiring of staff; provides on-going supervision for staff; conducts staff meetings; applies progressive discipline in accordance with the Collective Agreement as necessary.
  8.  Orients and trains new employees (crisis counsellors, child & youth counsellors, and relief counsellors) and students regarding the policies, services, and safety procedures of the shelter.
  9.  Develops schedules to ensure the safety and optimum provision of services and as per policy and budget.
  10.  Identifies training and development needs of employees and, in conjunction with the Client Services Supervisor, develops and implements an action plan to meet these needs.
  11.  Actively participates in weekly team meetings and provides a forum in which employees can raise new ideas, concerns, conflicts and suggestions regarding services and personnel matters.
  12.  Is available on an on-call rotational basis after hours.
  13.  Maintains accurate and up-to-date employment files for all employees whom she supervises.
  14.  Monitors and evaluates direct report performance providing timely feedback and completes evaluation documentations as required.
  15. Provides annual appraisals of all employees for whom she supervises.
  16.  Maintains employee attendance records and vacation schedules.
  17.  Provides monthly statistics, occupancy information for the monthly Regional Billing.
  18. Supervises the Children’s Program within the shelter.
  19. Regularly reviews all pertinent documentation relating to residents, staff, agency and property; works closely with the CSS and Manager regarding personnel issues.
  20. Operates within Program Budget.
  21. Completes other tasks that from time to time may be assigned.

 

The incumbent is expected to work 35 hours per week, shifts vary between 9-5 and 12-8pm on a rotational basis, Monday to Friday, but scheduling of time must be flexible to allow for evening or weekend supervision, appointments and meetings. The Client Services Supervisor provides on-call duties on a rotational basis and must be available to shelter employees. The position requires occasional travel.

Qualifications

  • The position requires BSW. MSW is considered an asset. Consideration may be given to candidates with a BSW in progress and related certification and experience.
  • Supervisory experience is an asset, previous residential experience is required.
  • In-depth knowledge of women’s issues and the dynamics of violence (physical, emotional, sexual and financial) against women and children from a feminist perspective.
  • A clear understanding of the needs of women and their children affected by violence and knowledge of community agencies and the referral process is required.
  • The incumbent must be knowledgeable and skilled in the day-to-day supervision of people and programs and have the ability to follow-up on tasks to ensure the optimum, safe and effective delivery of service.
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively with residents, non-residents, and other professionals, the public and employees.
  • Excellent listening skills and interpersonal skills and be non-judgemental, non-threatening, caring and empowering.
  • The ability to apply creative problem solving and the ability to stay focused for extended periods of time despite frequent interruptions and distractions.
  • Proven ability to prioritize, to plan and to respond to multiple demands on an ongoing basis.

    • Demonstrated ability to provide non-judgmental and culturally sensitive support to women and children
    • Willingness to develop knowledge and skills about violence against women and its impact upon children, women and the community
    • Sound knowledge of community agencies and resources
    • Capacity to work in a computerized environment and ability to track stats as needed
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills
    • Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team
    • Strong organizational and time management skills
    • Ability to conduct safety planning and resident care plans with women
    • Ability to facilitate women’s groups both educational/support and house meetings
    • Assist with on the job training of new staff, students and volunteers
    • Current CPR and First Aid is required
    • Knowledge of additional languages will be considered an asset
