Halton Women’s Place (HWP) mission is to provide a safe haven, information, and education to support a future without abuse for women and their children. Serving Halton women and families since 1978, Halton Women’s Place provides:
- Emergency shelter and/or crisis services accessible to all women experiencing violence and abuse and their dependent children.
- Crisis services and information to women and children living in the shelter and in the community at large.
- Non-judgmental, empathetic crisis counselling for all women experiencing violence and abuse and their dependent children.
- Strategies to inform and empower women experiencing violence and abuse and their dependent children to make decisions about their safety, rights and options.
- Strategies to promote and provide public education to end violence against women and children.
- A gateway to safety, support and a future without violence and abuse for women and their children.
HWP is currently seeking a community member to join our 10-person Board. This candidate represents the community of Burlington and offers the board their skills in a governance capacity. We are particularly looking for expertise in the area of Finance, Real Estate or Building/Contractor. The candidate demonstrates a history of community involvement and a passion for creating a life without violence toward women. The primary responsibilities of an HWP Board member include:
- Providing guidance and advice to the HWP’s Executive Director regarding strategic plans & financial matters.
- Participating actively in the board’s annual evaluations and planning efforts.
- Being informed about committee matters, preparing well for meetings, and reviewing and commenting on minutes, reports and scorecards.
- Participating on a standing Board committee and/or ad hoc committees as the need arises.
- Participating in fund raising for the organization through active participation at HWP events and via an annual personal financial contribution.
- Acting as an ambassador for the Halton Women’s Place organization.
- Building a collegial working relationship that contributes to consensus.
- Attending approximately 6-8 meetings per year – primarily Wednesday evenings, AGM, and an annual half-day off-site. Meetings may take place remotely or in person in Burlington.
- Committing to a minimum 2-year term.
