Safe Pet Program, For the Love of Paws
There are many reasons women stay with abusive partners and often times it is because their abuser has threatened to harm or kill the family pet and used this threat as leverage to keep women in these relationships. Research shows that 48% of survivors will delay leaving their abuser or not leave at all if they cannot take their pet with them to safety. We bridge a significant gap in the gender-based violence sector by offering our safe pet programs to survivors.
HWP’s safe pet program For the Love of Paws helps women temporarily re-home their pets so that they are able to access safety and heal from trauma while knowing their pets are being loved and cared for. We’ve partnered with local veterinarians and pet boarding agencies to provide safe and temporary spaces for the families who turn to HWP. By addressing the need for their pets’ safety women can make the best choices for themselves and their children.
If you or someone you know is in crisis and are worried about the safety of your pet please call our crisis information and support line to learn more about how we can help.
